Retain things long enough to see how they work, then throw them in the trash.Īll you're basically leaving behind is the Combat System (1 v 1) and the Capture System. At most keep one line around just to see how they evolve from one to another, but once you get your own set up, trash that as well. Every bit of art gets junked and will need to be redone.Ĭritters - I can't remember if they're actors or classes, but whatever they are - kill'em all. The Interface art also goes in the trash, as does all the tilesets. HitPoints isn't protectable, sure, but Stamina, Magic, Skill, Effort, Technique - something other than Power Points.Īrt - Take all the included Pokemon Art and throw it straight in the garbage. The Pokemon Angle, on the other hand, with the names in those spots and stats in those spots - that is protectable.Īs for what to change in Pokemon Essentials. The idea of a rear view of your figure while seeing the other figure is too generic to be protected. So - the idea of controlling a party of critters you build by beating the shit out of wild animals, capturing and taming them, and even them changing appearance due to various circumstances is not protectable.Ĭatching Grass Types that Evolve on Leveling Up is kinda protected (change at least one of those, if not two or three. The idea of "Spelling with tiles and each tile has a point value" is too generic to be protected. The board is different, scoring works different - the protected elements have changed. That's why Words with Friends can exist, even though it's just Scrabble.
Pikachu using Double Slap for 8 PP is protected.įunctionally, they're the same thing, which you may also want to adjust a bit too, but that's the general idea.
Grandar using Double Attack for 8 Stamina is not protected. The important thing, as what is and is not protected goes - Mechanics are not protectable, but UI elements, mathematical formulas, and unique names are.
If it's too big of a project right now, what do you think I should do instead? I have very little interest in making a vanilla RPG. If I can use plug-ins in the MZ trial, I'd like to know where to find them. Make the party separate from the player character in the overworldĬreate a battle system with a separate scene for battling monstersĬan anyone help me find good tutorials and / or plug-ins or scripts for this? I'd like to know how to:Make a system for catching and storing monsters The problem, though, is I'm a novice programmer, and I haven't found any complete tutorials for creating Pokemon-like games in RPG Maker that don't rely on Pokemon Essentials, and I've explained already that that's pretty much an illegal program. Nope, I'd rather go the legal, yet much more difficult, route and create an original game with original IP, where I program the mechanics I need for my game myself so that I retain all of the rights to the game I create, and can even sell it if I want to.
One of the main problems, though, is I don't have any way to create a good monster-catching game without Pokemon Essentials, and if I use that program, I might as well make a fangame, as the code itself contains references to Nintendo's IP. Ideally, I'd like to also change as much as I can of the game's mechanics while retaining its original intent. Rather than get hit with a cease and desist from the company, I've decided just to create another game that resembles a Pokemon game but does not use any of Nintendo's IP. It's risky to use someone else's IP, and Nintendo is a company that takes fan games as a pretty serious offense. I have everything I need to make a fairly decent Pokemon fangame using Pokemon Essentials, but I've decided not to go that route. I'm a fan of certain characters from the Pokemon anime, and originally I wanted to make a game showcasing why I love the characters.
